Aurat March
KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) took a significant step on Monday by issuing notices to the provincial government and other relevant entities in response to a petition challenging the annual Aurat March, which took place the previous week.
Filed by a group of women lawyers, the petition alleges that the Aurat March promotes activities contrary to societal values and Islamic Shariah. The lawyers claim that the event advocates for actions such as dance and nudity under the guise of women’s freedom, with organizations like the Arts Council allegedly permitting such occurrences.
A two-judge bench, led by Chief Justice SHC Justice Aqeel Ahmad Abbasi, presided over the case. The bench noted that the plea had been submitted before March 8, highlighting the timeliness of the filing. The petitioners’ counsel argued that despite their request for an early hearing, their plea had not been given due attention.
The court, while acknowledging women’s complete freedom under Islamic law, expressed concern about negative societal impacts resulting from certain activities.
The petitioners contended that cultural centers and parks, where the Aurat March and similar events are held, should cease this practice.
Following the arguments, the SHC issued notices to entities such as the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), the federal and provincial governments, and the Arts Council, instructing them to respond by March 19.
The Aurat March has sparked controversy in Pakistan, with accusations of promoting vulgarity and obscenity.
Supporters argue that it serves as a peaceful means to raise awareness about women’s rights and equality, prompting a broader debate on freedom of expression, women’s rights, and the use of public spaces for events.
Initiated in 2018 across major cities in Pakistan to commemorate International Women’s Day, the Aurat March has evolved into a social movement, uniting individuals from diverse backgrounds to advocate for women and transgender rights. Professionals and activists from various fields participate in the annual event, reflecting its broad societal impact.
