The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has announced a “mild cold wave” beginning today in Sindh, as winter intensifies across Pakistan with anticipated rain and snowfall in several regions.
Nighttime temperatures in upper Sindh are expected to range from 7°C to 9°C, while central Sindh will experience lows of 9°C to 11°C. Southern Sindh will see temperatures between 10°C and 12°C. Karachi is forecasted to record nighttime temperatures of 11°C to 13°C, extending into Sunday.
Dry, cool winds from the northeast and northwest will persist in the region.
Meanwhile, Balochistan is enduring a severe cold wave, with temperatures dropping drastically. Mountainous regions near the Afghan border recorded lows of -7°C, with Shelabagh at -6°C and areas such as Ziarat, Toba Achakzai, Khanuzai, and Qila Abdullah hitting -5°C. Other regions, including Chaman, Pishin, Muslim Bagh, and Kan Mehtarzai, reported temperatures of -3°C.
Frozen drains and streets have been observed in several areas due to the extreme cold, prompting the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) to caution about further temperature drops in northeastern and central Balochistan starting tomorrow.
Additionally, the dry, cold weather has led to an increase in seasonal illnesses, particularly among children, raising health concerns.
The PMD also predicts moderate rain, thunderstorms, and snowfall in hilly areas from today until December 11 in Chitral, Dir, Swat, and Gilgit-Baltistan. Similar conditions are forecasted in parts of Punjab today and tomorrow.
In upper Pakistan, severe cold persists, with Duki, Balochistan, experiencing its heaviest hailstorm in 42 years, amplifying the chill following snowfall four days ago.
Authorities are advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions, particularly in northern regions. Karachi is expected to continue experiencing cool nights in the coming days.
