UAE authorities directive to mosque preachers to shorten friday sermons amid sizzling weather

ABU DHABI: The United Arab Emirates has instructed mosque preachers nationwide to limit Friday sermons and prayers to a maximum of 10 minutes due to the extreme heat affecting the region, the state news agency reported on Thursday.

The directive from the UAE’s General Authority for Islamic Affairs, Endowments, and Zakat (AWQAF) will take effect on Friday and remain in place until early October, as per the WAM agency.

This measure aims to “ensure the safety of worshippers and meet the needs of those visiting the houses of God, especially during the summer months when temperatures are high,” WAM stated.

The UAE’s National Center of Meteorology reports that summer temperatures in the Gulf country frequently exceed 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit), with some areas reaching up to 50 C (122 F).

Additionally, during the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, 1,301 people died, 83% of whom were unregistered pilgrims exposed to direct sunlight without adequate shelter or comfort, Saudi Arabia’s health minister noted earlier this week.

Meanwhile, The UAE has announced updated visit visa fees for Pakistani nationals, effective immediately, to facilitate smoother entry procedures for tourists and visitors.

Starting June 2024, the fee for a 30-day tourist visa is AED 200, while a 60-day visa is priced at AED 300, both subject to an additional 5% value-added tax (VAT).

Additional Charges

Applicants already within the UAE who wish to obtain or extend their visa will incur supplementary charges, including Knowledge and Innovation Dirham fees totaling AED 20, and an in-country processing fee of AED 500.

Application Procedure

Applicants must submit a personal photo, a passport copy, a national identity card (for specified nationalities), valid UAE medical insurance, and proof of onward or return travel. Applications can be completed via the GDRFA website or smart application.

The UAE aims to strengthen its tourism sector by simplifying visa procedures and ensuring transparency in fee structures, maintaining its appeal as a top travel destination in the Gulf region.
