Snowfall
ABBOTTABAD: Heavy snowfall in Nathiagali and Galiyat has resulted in numerous tourists becoming stranded at Changla Street, creating challenging conditions in the mountainous regions.
The inclement weather has led to slippery roads, compounding the difficulties for tourists as long queues of vehicles are now a common sight. The mountainous regions, particularly in the snowfall season, attract visitors from various parts of Pakistan.
The Galiyat Development Authority (GDA) has been involved in rescue operations, successfully rescuing many stranded tourists. The spokesperson for GDA mentioned that more than 10 vehicles with tourists have been safely evacuated.
In a separate development, Rawalpindi traffic police have issued a new advisory and comprehensive plan to regulate traffic and provide assistance to tourists during snowfall in Murree. Chief Traffic Officer Rawalpindi, Taimoor Khan, emphasized the need for caution due to slippery roads caused by snowfall. Tourists were urged to opt for well-equipped vehicles considering the current conditions in Murree.
Taimoor Khan advised tourists to use tire chains and bring extra warm clothing for their stay in Murree, anticipating a slowdown in traffic flow due to snow and rain. Only licensed drivers have been allowed to enter Murree to ensure safety.
To further assist tourists, an emergency helpline (051-9269200) has been introduced, operating round the clock for complaints and inquiries. The helpline serves as a control room, coordinating efforts to provide necessary facilities to tourists and handle any unforeseen situations.
Meanwhile, Astore Valley Road has been blocked for the past 24 hours due to rain, snowfall, and landslides. The District Administration reported that the Public Works Department has partially cleared the road, but challenges persist in maintaining traffic access in the area.
