Ten climbers, both local and international, successfully reached the summit of Spantik Peak (7,027 meters), located between the Shigar and Nagar districts, marking the final expedition of the summer season.
The expedition team, which began their ascent from the Shigar side of the mountain—also known as Golden Peak—on Friday evening, completed their climb on Sunday morning at 10:40 am. The climbers included Stuart James, Peter Upton, and David Willis from Australia; Maria Pujadas from Spain; David Lavie from France; and Pakistani climbers Mirza Ali, Ahmed Baig, Rizwan Dad, Waqar Ali, and Zaman Karim. The expedition was organized by Karakoram Expeditions, and after their successful summit, the team safely descended to base camp.
Earlier, on August 10, another group of four Pakistani climbers also successfully summited Spantik Peak. This group included Asad Ali Memon from Sindh, Muhammad Amin from the Hushe Valley in Gilgit-Baltistan, Farooq Ahmed from Islamabad, and Jawahir Ali from Arandu, Shigar.
This climbing season, however, was marked by tragedy as three Japanese climbers lost their lives while attempting to scale Spantik Peak. One climber fell into a crevasse while descending, and his body was later recovered by local climbers and high-altitude porters from the Hoper Valley of Nagar district. Two other Japanese climbers, who went missing in June during their summit attempt, were found dead at Camp 1.
