Transgender activist Sobia Khan has taken her case to the Peshawar High Court (PHC), highlighting the absence of allocated seats for transgender individuals in elections.
Sobia Khan, an independent candidate running for PK-81 and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s inaugural transgender radio jockey, is emphasizing her commitment to championing women’s and children’s rights.
In a parallel development, another transgender individual, Nayab Ali, is contesting for NA-47 in Islamabad. It is noteworthy that in the 2018 elections, Maria, a transgender candidate, ran independently in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, securing 536 votes and surpassing the vote counts of female candidates.
Sobia Khan, an advocate for transgender rights, has formally submitted her candidacy papers as an independent candidate for constituency PK-81. The petition argues that given the right of transgender individuals to vote, it is imperative that they also have the right to actively participate in elections.
Highlighting the significance of transgender representation in the Assembly, the petition emphasizes the necessity for reserved seats for the transgender community, akin to the provisions made for minorities and women. The plea aims to address the current disparity in political representation and strives to ensure that the transgender community has a platform for meaningful participation in the democratic process.
As this issue reaches the Peshawar High Court, it signifies a potential milestone in advocating for the political rights and inclusion of transgender individuals in electoral processes.
