Smog problem: LHC orders closure of markets, restaurants in Lahore at 10pm

LAHORE/ISLAMABAD: The Lahore High Court today ordered the closure of markets and restaurants by 10pm in a bid to overcome smog problem.

LHC Judge Justice Shahid Karim gave this order while hearing a petition pertaining to court’s intervention to control smog.

The LHC Judge said that the timing of closure of restaurants can be extended to 11pm on weekends.

At present, Lahore is amongst the most polluted cities in the world with extremely poor air quality.

The Lahore High Court also directed local authorities to seal schools which are operating on Fridays in violation of the court order.

The Lahore High Court adjourned the hearing of the smog case till Dec 19.

Meanwhile, last week the Punjab administration ordered the closure of schools and offices in Lahore on Fridays and Saturdays as per the court’s directive..

The notification, issued by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), stated that the staff may continue to work from home. The order will remain effective till January 15, 2023.
