ISLAMABAD: The Lakki Marwat district police successfully thwarted a terrorist attack on the Peezo police station.
The assailants, armed with firearms and hand grenades, attempted to strike the police station, but the timely response of the police, including retaliatory fire, led to the attackers fleeing the scene without causing any casualties.
In a separate incident earlier in the day, an attempted attack on the 15 Police post at Gundi Chowk was also foiled by the police.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) region has witnessed a disturbing rise in terror attacks over the past few years, particularly since the Taliban-led administration assumed control of Afghanistan in 2021.
The southern districts of KP, in particular, have experienced a deterioration in the law and order situation, marked by increased assaults on police, security forces, and civilians.
Recent months have seen terrorists targeting political figures and gatherings in certain parts of the province, alongside attacks on security personnel, including the military and police.
While acknowledging challenges, senior police officials have indicated improvements in other parts of the province, with ongoing efforts to enhance law and order in the southern districts of KP.
As the country approaches a crucial general election scheduled for February 8, the military has been actively conducting operations against terrorist outfits, especially in KP.
In a recent intelligence-based operation in Mir Ali, North Waziristan district, security forces eliminated four terrorists.
The year 2023 recorded a total of 586 terror attacks, with 17% attributed to banned groups such as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), Daesh, and others.
Simultaneously, security forces carried out 197 operations against outlaws, resulting in the deaths of 537-545 individuals involved in such activities.
