LAHORE: The Punjab government has unveiled a comprehensive plan to distribute free solar panels and offer subsidized loans for solar installation, aiming to alleviate the financial burden of rising electricity bills on the public.
In a statement, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz acknowledged the distress caused by escalating electricity costs and assured the public that the government is attentive to their concerns. The plan outlines specific provisions based on electricity consumption levels.
Consumers using up to 200 units of electricity per month will be provided with free solar panels, ensuring immediate relief for low-consumption households. For those using between 200 to 500 units per month, the government will offer interest-free loans for solar panel installation, making it easier for medium-consumption households to transition to solar power. Additionally, consumers exceeding 500 units per month will be eligible for loans covering 75% of the installation costs, also interest-free.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to empower citizens to generate their electricity through solar power, thereby reducing dependence on conventional energy sources and mitigating the impact of rising tariffs. “The government will make every effort to provide relief to the citizens, especially the underprivileged, and will always stand up for their rights,” Maryam Nawaz emphasized.
The announcement follows a similar initiative by Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori, who last month committed to providing free solar panels to tenants using up to 300 units of electricity. These provincial efforts reflect a growing recognition of the importance of renewable energy solutions in addressing both economic and environmental challenges.
Moreover, the Federal Government’s recent budget announcement underscores this commitment, with no new duties imposed on solar panels and measures to make the production of solar panels, inverters, and batteries more affordable.
As the Punjab government moves forward with its solar initiative, it aims to create a sustainable energy future for its citizens, reducing financial strain and promoting energy independence.
