President Alvi Urges Respect for People’s Mandate Amid Alleged Rigging Protests

People’s Mandate

ISLAMABAD: As political parties, particularly Imran Khan’s founding Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), protest against alleged rigging in the February 8 polls, President Arif Alvi has emphasized the importance of respecting the people’s mandate and promoting political inclusion.

During an address at a ceremony in Islamabad on Monday, President Alvi highlighted that financial inclusion is intricately linked to the active participation of the people in the political process.

He commended the “millions of young voters” for demonstrating trust in the country’s democratic system. Expressing concern, he noted that if the youth’s confidence in the system is undermined, it would not be in the country’s best interest.

President Alvi cautioned against the trend of competent individuals being “forced out of politics,” stressing the need for political spaces to be open to capable contributors.

He warned of potential consequences for excluding people from the development process, emphasizing that development and prosperity rely on effective leadership and timely decision-making.

The president expressed his reservations about the slow decision-making and perceived lack of leadership in the country, indicating that these factors impede progress. He reiterated his belief that the electoral process could have been enhanced with the implementation of electronic voting machines (EVMs).

However, he lamented that personal interests have hindered the introduction of EVMs, which could have contributed to a more transparent and efficient electoral system.

President Alvi’s remarks underscore the broader challenges facing the political landscape in Pakistan, including concerns about electoral integrity, leadership, and the need for reforms to strengthen democratic processes.
