The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a warning about a potential drought due to insufficient rainfall across the province.
In an official letter to commissioners, deputy commissioners, and relevant departments, PDMA cited data from the Meteorological Department, indicating that winter rainfall was 38% below normal levels. The alert highlights an increased risk of drought in Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, and Rahim Yar Khan.
The reduced rainfall threatens to impact the Rabi season, particularly affecting rice production, which could lead to financial losses for farmers.
PDMA has assured that measures are in place to address the anticipated water shortage in Thal and Cholistan. However, authorities have been urged to stay alert and inform farmers in advance about possible water scarcity.
Additionally, PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia has instructed that the School Education Department be involved in an awareness campaign to ensure necessary precautions are taken to safeguard crops and livestock.
