A high-speed rail project connecting Lahore to Rawalpindi, estimated to cost $1.6 billion, has been submitted to the Punjab Chief Minister for approval. The project has been developed by the departments of transport and mass transit, aiming to significantly reduce travel time between the two major cities. Trains on this new rail line are expected to reach speeds of up to 250km/h, allowing passengers to travel between Lahore and Rawalpindi in less than two hours, a dramatic improvement over current travel times.
The proposal calls for the preparation of an action plan, taking into account a pre-feasibility study conducted by the railway department. This study, crucial for the project’s next steps, will be funded by the Department of Planning and Development. The pre-feasibility study will assess various technical and economic aspects to ensure the viability of the high-speed rail. However, securing upfront financing remains a major hurdle, as the project demands significant investment and financial commitment before breaking ground.
If approved, the high-speed rail will be a milestone in modernizing Pakistan’s transportation infrastructure, providing a fast, efficient, and sustainable travel solution for passengers between Lahore and Rawalpindi. This project is seen as a critical step in addressing the growing demand for improved public transportation in the country, enhancing connectivity and driving economic growth in key urban centers. However, the realization of the project hinges on securing the necessary financial backing and political approval.
