Over 1,700 Muslims Booked In Kanpur For Offering Eid Namaz On Road
Police stations in Kanpur have lodged FIRs against 1700 Muslims for offering Eid namaz on the road outside Jajmau, Babupurwa, and Badi Idgah Benazhabar on April 22.
The police accused the namaz worshippers, including members of the Idgah Committee, of violating the ban on offering namaz on the streets, resulting in their booking.
200 to 300 people booked in Jajmau, 40 to 50 in Babupurwa, and 1500 in Bajaria.
Brijesh Kumar, the in-charge of the Begumpurwa outpost, held a peace committee meeting before Eid and informed the attendees that offering namaz on the road would not be permitted.
He also clarified that Eid prayers could only be offered inside Idgahs and mosques.
And the police would make alternative arrangements for those who missed Namaz due to the crowd.
On the day of Eid, a large crowd suddenly gathered on the road in front of the Idgah, just before the prayers began.
Despite the ban, everyone started praying on the road, and the police’s attempts to stop them were unsuccessful.
The police have registered an FIR against those who offered namaz on the road, including members of the Idgah Committee, based on the complaint of the outpost in charge.
They are using CCTV footage to identify the offenders.
Case Filed Against Eid Namaz Worshippers
The Babupurwa police have filed a case against the worshippers under various sections including 186, 188, 283, 341, and 353 for obstructing public service and violating the ban on offering namaz on the road.
The Bajaria police station has registered an FIR against 1,500 individuals, including members of the Idgah Committee, for offering namaz on the road and causing traffic jams despite police refusal.
Mohammed Suleman, a member of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, responded to the FIR by stating that it targeted a particular community and that the nation appeared to belong to only one religion. He further added that people held prayers inside mosques and Idgahs, and if there was not enough space, they prayed on the road for a few minutes.
He condemned the trial not for offering namaz on the street but for obstructing public service, which he believes is not good for society.
According to him, the government is flouting the Constitution, and Yogi’s government is not running on the Constitution.
He also mentioned that people killed in police custody, and the police remained silent.
In Farrukhabad, people offered namaz on the platform and no unrest spread.
