New Chief Justice of Federal Shariat Court Iqbal Hameedur Rahman takes oath today

ISLAMABAD: New Chief Justice of the Federal Shariat Court Justice Iqbal Hameedur Rahman took oath on Thursday morning. Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial administered the oath.

The ceremony of oath taking of Justice Iqbal Hameedur Rahman took place at the Supreme Court of Pakistan this morning.

Judges of the Supreme Court and the attorney general for Pakistan attended the ceremony.

The Supreme Court Judges who attended the ceremony are: Justice Qazi Faez Isa, Justice Sardar Tariq, Justice Ijazul Ahsan, Justice Mansoor, Justice Muneeb Akhtar, Justice Yahya Afridi and Justice Aminuddin, Justice Mazahar Ali Naqvi, Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhel, Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, Justice Shahid Waheed and Justice Hasan Azhar Rizvi.

Who is Justice Iqbal Hameedur Rahman?

Justice Iqbal Hameedur Rahman was born in Dacca in 1956. He got his LLB degree from the Punjab University, Law College, Lahore in 1980. He started his career as a lawyer in 1983. He got enrolled as an advocate of the High court in 1983 and the Supreme Court in 1997. Late chief justice of Pakistan Justice Hamoodur Rahman was his father.

In 1998, for the first time, the lawyers community elected Iqbal Hameedur Rahman as secretary of the Lahore High Court Bar Association. In 2006, he became as an additional judge of the Lahore High Court. In October 2007, he became a permanent judge.

After the promulgation of the Provisional Constitutional Order in 2007, he refused to take oath under the PCO.

After implementation of the 18th Amendment and establishment of the Islamabad High Court, he became its first constitutional chief justice on January 3, 2011. In Feb 2013, Justice Iqbal the government appointed him as a judge of the Supreme Court.

Justice Rahman’s father was Justice Hamoodur Rahman, the chief justice of Pakistan in 1968 and author of the Hamoodur Rahman Commission Report that inquired into the circumstances leading to the breakup of Pakistan in 1971.
