Lahore High Court Summons Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz Over Delay in Judges’ Appointment

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has summoned Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on May 24 concerning the delay in appointing judges to special courts.

LHC Chief Justice Malik Shahzad Ahmed Khan presided over the case today. During the hearing, the Advocate General of Punjab informed the court that a government committee had discussed the judges’ appointments with the Chief Minister, emphasizing that it was a priority for the upcoming cabinet session.

He elaborated on the extensive consultations and the earnest efforts being made to address the matter promptly, highlighting the importance of ensuring the judiciary’s effective functioning through timely appointments.

However, the LHC Chief Justice inquired about the date of the next cabinet session, seeking clarity on the timeline for the resolution of the issue.

In response, the Advocate General assured the court that the matter would be thoroughly addressed in the cabinet session scheduled for Friday. He reiterated the government’s commitment to expeditiously resolve the issue and ensure the timely appointment of judges to the special courts, underscoring the significance of upholding the rule of law.

As a result, the court instructed the Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and the cabinet to issue a notification regarding the judges’ appointments before the next hearing, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the established timelines and judicial directives.

The court firmly warned that it would summon the Punjab Chief Minister if the cabinet failed to issue the notification by the specified time, underscoring the significance of timely action in maintaining the integrity of the judiciary and upholding justice in the province.
