“This was not an incident of dacoity or theft and the terrorists opened fire on police officials. This is a signal for us that terror incidents have started taking place in Islamabad,” Interior Minister said.

ISLAMABAD: Sheikh Rasheed, Federal Minister for Interior today forewarned the people of more terrorist attacks in Islamabad after a policeman was shot dead and two others injured at a check-post in the capital city on late Monday night.

Interior Minister said that a gun battle took place between the two militants and cops. In this exchange of fire, a policeman, two militants were killed while two cops sustained injuries. The gun-fire occurred at a police check-point in the vicinity of the Karachi Company police station.

“This was not an incident of dacoity or theft and the terrorists opened fire on police officials. This is a signal for us that terror incidents have started taking place in Islamabad,” said Interior Minister while speaking to journalists after funeral prayer of the martyred police official.

The interior minister said authorities needed to remain alert, as he noted the incident was “purely of terrorism”. Rasheed said the authorities had tracked down the “sleeper cell” of the terrorists through their motorcycle.

“Islamabad police and other forces are on alert.”

Shahid Zaman, a senior Islamabad Police official, said the incident was “an act of terrorism”.

The martyred police official has been identified as Head Constable Munawwar, while the injured include Amin and Rashid, a spokesperson for the police said.

The spokesperson added that the wounded officers received treatment at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS).

“This is the first terror-related incident in Islamabad in 2022, but police, through this encounter, have proved that they are ready to lay down their lives no matter what comes their way,” minister added.
