An Indian prisoner was found dead in Karachi’s Malir jail, in what authorities suspect to be a case of suicide, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
According to prison officials, the inmate, identified as Gaurav, son of Ram Anand, was incarcerated at Malir jail on February 2, 2022, following a court order.
Gaurav reportedly used a piece of rope to hang himself in the washroom of the barrack designated for Indian prisoners. Jail authorities stated that the on-duty doctor examined him and pronounced him dead at approximately 2:20 am. A magistrate later conducted an inquest and ordered that the body be moved to a morgue pending further legal procedures.
Superintendent District Jail Malir, Arshad Shah, confirmed that the incident occurred between the night of March 24 and 25. Following confirmation of his death, the body was transferred to Jinnah Hospital for medico-legal formalities and later shifted to the Edhi Mortuary in Sohrab Goth. Authorities stated that an autopsy would be conducted under the magistrate’s supervision.
Discussions are ongoing with the Indian consulate regarding the verification of the deceased’s identity and nationality.
Earlier this year, Pakistan and India exchanged lists of prisoners and nuclear installations as per a bilateral agreement. Under the 2008 Consular Access Agreement, both nations share prisoner lists on January 1 and July 1 annually.
On January 1, Pakistan provided a list of 266 Indian detainees—comprising 49 civilian prisoners and 217 fishermen—to the Indian High Commission in Islamabad. Concurrently, India shared details of 462 Pakistani inmates—381 civilian prisoners and 81 fishermen—held in Indian jails with the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi.
