Imran Khan, the founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, threatened legal action against the chairman of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and the investigation officer (IO) during a hearing on Friday. Khan, who is currently imprisoned, accused NAB IO Mohsin Haroon of fabricating cases against him and his wife, Bushra Bibi, leading to her imprisonment.
The hearing was part of a new Toshakhana reference involving a jewelry set gifted to Bushra by the Saudi crown prince while Khan was prime minister from 2018 to 2022. On September 2, an accountability court in Rawalpindi extended the judicial remand for Khan and his wife in this case.
During the hearing, Imran Khan vowed to take legal action against both Haroon and the NAB chairman once he is released from jail, claiming he would hold them accountable for the alleged false cases. This isn’t the first instance of Khan making threats; he previously targeted Judge Zeba Chaudhry and Islamabad’s top police officials after his ouster in April 2022.
Following the hearing, the NAB prosecution team requested an adjournment due to the absence of prosecutor Umar Majeed and the need to review a Supreme Court verdict on NAB amendments. The accountability court granted the adjournment until September 9.
In a statement to journalists, Khan also addressed internal party issues, warning against undermining Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur and advising party members to avoid internal conflicts. He emphasized his support for Gandapur and cautioned against future complaints about election tickets.
Regarding Bushra Bibi’s legal troubles, she was initially arrested in January and placed under house arrest in Bani Gala alongside Khan following their conviction in the Toshakhana case. Her sentence was later suspended by the Islamabad High Court (IHC) in April, but she was moved to Adiala Jail in May after challenging her house arrest. Although Khan and Bushra were acquitted of the iddat case in July, Bushra remains incarcerated on other charges, including the £190m NCA scandal and a new Toshakhana reference involving the Saudi gift.
