Hina Jilani Appointed Co-Chair of IBA’s Human Rights Institute

Hina Jilani

Renowned lawyer and pro-democracy advocate Hina Jilani has been appointed as the co-chair of the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute (IBAHRI) Council. The legal body confirmed that her tenure in this prestigious role will run until December 31, 2026.

Expressing her gratitude, Jilani said, “It is an honor for me to become the co-chair and to join IBAHRI’s efforts to promote and protect human rights and the rule of law. I share IBAHRI’s vision and recognize the critical role this institution is playing globally in improving access to justice for all.”

Born in Lahore, Jilani has dedicated her life to defending and promoting human rights, with a particular focus on the rights of women, children, minorities, and political prisoners.

Her legal career has been marked by groundbreaking cases that have set new standards for human rights in Pakistan. As an advocate of the Supreme Court of Pakistan since 1992, Jilani continues to be a prominent figure in the country’s legal community.

Jilani is also a member of The Elders, an independent group of global leaders working for peace, justice, and human rights, which was founded by Nelson Mandela in 2007.

Over the years, she has received numerous accolades for her unwavering commitment to human rights, including the Millennium Peace Prize for Women in 2001.

Mark Stephens CBE, her co-chair at the IBAHRI and former president of the Commonwealth Lawyers Association, expressed his enthusiasm for working alongside Jilani. “I’m thrilled to welcome Hina Jilani, a global icon of human rights, to the IBAHRI as co-chair.

She brings an unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law and promoting universal human rights. It is an honor to work with such an esteemed lawyer and passionate advocate for fundamental human rights,” he said.

Baroness Helena Kennedy KC, the director of the IBAHRI, also praised Jilani’s appointment. “It is an enormous pleasure and privilege to welcome Hina Jilani as co-chair of the IBAHRI.

She is a renowned and respected lawyer and human rights activist. The IBAHRI has already greatly benefited from Hina’s wisdom and experience through her role as a member of the High-Level Panel of Legal Experts on Media Freedom, for which we serve as the secretariat. We look forward to working even more closely with her over the next few years,” she remarked.

Jilani’s appointment is seen as a significant step forward in the IBAHRI’s ongoing mission to promote justice, equality, and human rights globally.
