On Friday, the brother tasked with submitting Fawad Chaudhry’s nomination papers for the 2024 general election was apprehended by the police in Jehlum.
Law enforcement officials asserted that Faraz Chaudhry, sibling of the former federal minister, is a suspect in multiple cases. The arrest occurred in NA-60, where Faraz Chaudhry had arrived to file the nomination papers on behalf of his brother, Fawad Chaudhry.
In a related incident last week, Sher Afzal Marwat, a leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), was arrested outside the Lahore High Court (LHC). Marwat, serving as the senior vice president of the party, was taken into custody by a substantial police presence while leaving the high court premises after participating in a lawyers’ convention. Police cited the arrest under 3MPO (Maintenance of Public Order) and subsequently transported Marwat to the Mazang police station.
A week later, the senior vice president of PTI, who had been detained outside the LHC, contested his imprisonment under 3MPO, resulting in his release following the Lahore High Court’s directive.
Fawad Chaudhry Granted Post-Arrest Bail By Court In Graft Case
Meanwhile, a special court in Rawalpindi granted post-arrest bail to former federal minister Fawad Chaudhry in a corruption case, marking a significant development in the ongoing legal proceedings. The court’s decision on Monday directed authorities to release the ex-minister, who had been in custody since November, on the condition of submitting a surety bond of Rs200,000.
Fawad, a former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmaker, faced allegations of accepting a Rs5 million bribe from a citizen in an August 2022 case. Initially, he was remanded in police custody for two days, followed by an extension of physical remand and subsequent placement on judicial remand in Adiala jail.
Faisal Chaudhary, Fawad’s brother and lawyer, shared that the politician has intentions to contest the upcoming general elections scheduled for February 8, 2024. However, the choice of the political party for which he will contest remains undecided.
Addressing a reported rift between Fawad and his sister-in-law, Hiba Fawad, Faisal stated that the family would handle the domestic matter privately.
