The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has disqualified 24 former lawmakers from the National and provincial assemblies for failing to submit their financial statements for the fiscal year 2022-23.
The decision, made after a comprehensive review of the cases, includes 10 former Members of the National Assembly (MNAs) and seven ex-lawmakers each from the Sindh and Balochistan assemblies.
Notable disqualified MNAs include Khurram Dastgir Khan, Mohsin Shahnawaz Ranjha, Mohammad Adil, Rana Mohammad Ishaq Khan, Kamaluddin, and Ismatullah. Additionally, the ECP disqualified former MNAs Samina Matloob, Nasiba, Shamim Ara Panwar, and Rubina Irfan for failing to submit their financial details.
The electoral body’s ruling makes it clear that these individuals will remain ineligible to contest any future elections unless they fulfill the required financial disclosure obligations. The decision underscores the ECP’s commitment to transparency and accountability in the electoral process.
Under Pakistan’s electoral laws, all lawmakers are required to submit their annual financial statements detailing their assets, liabilities, and sources of income. Failure to comply with this requirement results in disqualification, as per the Election Act. The disqualified lawmakers can only regain eligibility once they submit the pending financial documents.
This development serves as a strong reminder for politicians regarding the importance of financial transparency. The ECP has consistently emphasized the need for strict compliance with election laws to uphold public trust in the democratic process.
The decision may also impact the political landscape, as several disqualified lawmakers have been active members of their respective parties. Political analysts believe this move could prompt other lawmakers to ensure timely submission of their financial records to avoid similar consequences.
The ECP has urged all public representatives to comply with financial disclosure regulations to ensure a transparent electoral system. Further action may be taken if additional violations are identified.
