Days after securing bail in the cipher case, PTI Vice-Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi faced a new setback as he was detained on Tuesday.
A detention order was issued, citing his alleged involvement in instigating violence during the May 9 riots. The order, under the Maintenance of Public Order, expressed concern that Qureshi’s release might pose a threat to public safety and lead to law and order issues.
The Supreme Court had approved Qureshi’s bail on December 22, criticizing the Islamabad High Court’s decision to deny bail as perverse. However, a 15-day detention order was issued, starting from Qureshi’s entrance into the Central/District jail to prevent potential breaches of peace. The decision followed the endorsement of the central CPO’s recommendation by Rawalpindi’s District Intelligence Committee, aiming to curb Qureshi’s alleged “unlawful activities” that could jeopardize public safety.
This development was a blow to PTI’s expectations of Qureshi’s release, which could have boosted the party ahead of the February 8, 2024 elections, especially in the context of Imran Khan’s incarceration and several leaders leaving the party. Qureshi’s daughter confirmed his detention on social media.
Notably, many PTI leaders, including Qureshi, faced similar detentions under the 3-MPO for their alleged involvement in the May 9 violence triggered by Imran Khan’s arrest.
Despite efforts by Qureshi’s legal team, the release orders were not issued promptly. Qureshi’s lawyer expressed frustration over the delay, stating that they had submitted surety bonds and completed the necessary paperwork.
Administrative hindrances were cited as the reason for the delay, with the legal team awaiting the judge’s signature on the release order. If the order was not issued promptly, they planned to approach the apex court for resolution.
