Accountability Court Grants Seven-Day Remand for Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi in Toshakhana Case

RAWALPINDI: An accountability court has approved a seven-day physical remand for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, in the Toshakhana reference recently filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). The anti-corruption body presented the couple in court after the expiration of their previous eight-day remand.

The NAB had requested a 14-day remand for the couple; however, the court denied this request, granting a physical remand only until July 29.

On July 13, Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were arrested in the new NAB reference related to the Toshakhana case, just hours after their acquittal in the Iddat case. The NAB team, led by Deputy Director Mohsin Haroon, executed the arrest at Adiala Jail, according to sources familiar with the situation.

The arrests followed the acceptance of appeals by the Islamabad district and sessions court, which overturned the convictions of Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi in the Iddat case. Earlier this year, in February, the couple had been sentenced to seven years in prison and fined Rs500,000 each after a trial court ruled their nikah fraudulent.

This recent court decision cleared a significant legal hurdle that had kept the former prime minister imprisoned. Imran Khan’s sentences in the two Toshakhana cases were previously suspended, and he was acquitted by the Islamabad High Court (IHC) in the cipher case.

The Toshakhana case has garnered significant attention, involving allegations of irregularities in the handling of state gifts. The ongoing investigation and legal proceedings continue to be closely watched as they unfold, with implications for the political landscape in Pakistan.
