MNA Sher Afzal Marwat, who was recently expelled from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has alleged that former army chief General (retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa, in collaboration with former Chief Justice Saqib Nisar, orchestrated the ousting of Nawaz Sharif from power.
Speaking on a private news channel on Monday, Marwat stated, “Nawaz was wrongfully removed from office, and there is no doubt that Bajwa and Nisar were behind his removal.”
Nawaz Sharif, who was dismissed as prime minister in 2017 following the Panama Papers verdict, also lost the leadership of his party in 2018. He was later sentenced to seven years in prison in the Al-Azizia case in December 2018.
Marwat, who has been critical of PTI’s leadership since his expulsion, emphasized that his former party could not have played any role in Nawaz’s removal. “The crime he was convicted for was unjust,” Marwat added. “Had it been related to Avenfield or Panama, the situation might have been different.”
Marwat also compared himself to Nawaz Sharif, stating that both leaders still struggle to understand the reasons behind their political ousters. “I don’t understand why I was removed, just as Nawaz still doesn’t know why he was ousted,” he said.
He went on to highlight the irony of the situation, noting how both the PML-N and PPP celebrated when Imran Khan, PTI’s founder, was sentenced in the Iddat and cipher cases. Similarly, he said, PTI celebrated when Nawaz Sharif faced his downfall.
Marwat’s comments add fuel to the ongoing political drama surrounding the PTI and its internal rifts, following the imprisonment of party founder Imran Khan in 2023.
