High-Level Meeting Reviews Project
A high-level meeting on Monday reviewed the proposed eco-friendly Elevated Expressway project in Lahore. The initiative is designed to ease traffic congestion and provide daily commuters with faster, safer travel options.
Expressway Route and Capacity
The four-lane expressway will stretch from Gulberg to Babu Sabu along the city’s stormwater drain. Authorities estimate it will serve more than 70,000 passengers daily. Travel time between Gulberg Main Boulevard and Motorway M-2 will be reduced to just 10 minutes.
Interchanges for Smooth Connectivity
The project includes six major interchanges to ensure uninterrupted traffic flow. Additional interchanges will link the expressway with Metro Bus and Orange Line routes. This integration will allow public transport commuters to benefit directly from the new route.
Environmental and Policy Goals
Officials highlighted that the expressway will reduce traffic pressure and cut carbon emissions. These measures align with government commitments to adopt eco-friendly and sustainable urban policies.
Relocation and Future Plans
Discussions also covered shifting major markets outside Lahore’s urban core. Authorities proposed developing a new bus terminal near the motorway, connected directly with the expressway for better access.
Oversight and Approval
The Lahore Traffic Decongestion Committee will supervise planning and project execution. A comprehensive Environmental Impact Study will be conducted before the final approval. The project will then be presented to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif for consideration. Senior officials from LDA, WASA Punjab, and Nespak were present during the session.
