King Salman has appointed a new Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia following the death of Sheikh Abdulaziz Al Sheikh.
Sheikh Dr Saleh Al Humaid Appointed as Grand Mufti
Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz has appointed Sheikh Dr Saleh bin Abdullah Al Humaid as the new Grand Mufti of the Kingdom and Head of the Senior Council of Scholars.
Dr Al Humaid succeeds Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Abdullah Al Sheikh, who passed away on Tuesday after serving for more than 25 years.
Longtime Imam of Masjid Al Haram
Dr Al Humaid is among the most respected Islamic scholars in the Muslim world. He has served as Imam and Khateeb of Masjid Al Haram in Makkah for more than four decades. He also delivered the Hajj sermon at Masjid Namira in Arafat, a role highlighting his prominence in Islamic scholarship.
Contributions in Governance and Scholarship
In addition to his religious service, Dr Al Humaid has been part of the Majlis Al Shura (Consultative Council) since 1993. He even served as its Speaker, contributing significantly to Saudi governance.
Currently, he holds the presidency of the International Islamic Fiqh Academy in Jeddah and is an active member of the Arabic Language Academy.
Recognition and Achievements
His scholarly contributions have received international recognition. In 2016, Dr Al Humaid was honoured with the King Faisal International Prize for Service to Islam. His decades of scholarship and service reflect his standing as a leading Islamic authority.

His appointment marks a significant transition in the Kingdom’s religious leadership. Sheikh Abdulaziz Al Sheikh, his predecessor, was among Saudi Arabia’s most influential religious figures in modern history. Dr Al Humaid now steps into this pivotal role, shaping the country’s religious discourse and guiding the Senior Council of Scholars.
