RIYADH: The King of Saudi Arabia has appointed Sheikh Saleh bin Fawzan bin Abdullah Al-Fawzan as the new Grand Mufti of the Kingdom, following a recommendation by the Crown Prince. A royal decree was issued after the King’s approval, officially confirming Sheikh Saleh’s appointment.
According to Arab media reports, Sheikh Saleh will also serve as the Chairman of the Council of Senior Scholars and the Head of the General Presidency for Scholarly Research and Ifta.
A Lifetime of Scholarship and Service
Born on September 28, 1935, in Saudi Arabia’s Al-Qassim province, Sheikh Saleh memorized the Quran under a local imam after his father’s passing. Over the years, he became one of the Kingdom’s most respected Islamic scholars.
He gained prominence through his long-running radio program “Noor ala al-Darb” (“Light the Way”), where he provided religious guidance to listeners. Sheikh Saleh also authored numerous books and appeared regularly on television, with his fatwas widely shared on social media platforms.
Succession After Grand Mufti’s Passing
The appointment follows the death of the former Grand Mufti, Sheikh Abdulaziz Al Sheikh, who passed away on September 23, 2025. Sheikh Abdulaziz had held the position since 1999 and was revered for his extensive contributions to Islamic jurisprudence, issuing key religious rulings on various legal and social issues.
