KARACHI — A major breakthrough has emerged in the murder investigation of senior lawyer Khawaja Shamsul Islam, with police submitting their initial report to the Anti-Terrorism Administrative Court in Karachi.
According to the report, the incident occurred after Khawaja Shamsul Islam attended a funeral prayer at Khayaban-e-Rahat with his son, Daniyalul Islam. As they stepped away from the mosque following the prayers, they were attacked. Police allege that prime suspect Imran Afridi fired two shots—one fatally striking Khawaja Shamsul Islam and the other injuring his son—before escaping in the confusion.
Eight individuals have been declared absconders in the case, including Imran Afridi, Zarar Afridi, Inam Khan, and Usman. The others named are Taqdeer, Bahar Gul, Khasta Gul, and Shehryar. The FIR lists charges of murder, attempted murder, and offences under anti-terrorism laws. Police informed the court that all suspects remain at large.
Earlier, in a confessional video, Imran Afridi admitted to killing Khawaja Shamsul Islam. He claimed the lawyer was responsible for the kidnapping, torture, and murder of his father, a police constable, following a financial dispute involving Rs 3.5 million. Afridi said the two men had once been friends but fell out over money matters.
Expressing deep mistrust in the justice system, Afridi stated he took revenge himself, acting alone without the involvement of family or friends. He appealed for his relatives not to be harassed, insisting they had no role in the crime.
The case has gripped Karachi’s legal community, with authorities under pressure to apprehend the remaining fugitives and bring the matter to a swift conclusion.
