Traffic diverted as authorities manage congestion in District South
Karachi: Karachi authorities closed MT Khan Road again on Tuesday due to the prevailing security situation, the traffic police announced in an early morning alert.
The closure follows violent protests on Sunday that left 10 people dead after demonstrations erupted over the assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in US-Israeli strikes. Meanwhile, officials extended a ban on public gatherings and rallies across Sindh to prevent further unrest.
According to an alert issued at 5:38am for District South, police shut both sides of MT Khan Road from the PIDC signal to Jinnah Bridge for security reasons. Consequently, officers diverted traffic from PIDC toward Khajoor Chowk and Dr. Ziauddin Ahmed Road. They also redirected vehicles from Jinnah Bridge toward II Chundrigar Road.
Later, at 9:21am, traffic police reported heavy congestion along both sides of II Chundrigar Road from Jinnah Bridge toward Tower and Shaheen Complex, attributing the buildup to the MT Khan Road closure.
Police urge commuters to use helpline and alternative routes
Authorities urged citizens to contact the Traffic Helpline at 1915 for guidance on alternative routes to avoid inconvenience. In addition, officials advised residents to tune in to FM 88.6 for real-time traffic updates.
“Traffic police are present and managing the flow of traffic,” the statement said, emphasizing active deployment in affected areas.
On Monday, officials had also closed both sides of the road from Sultanabad Traffic Section to Mai Kolachi, as well as key stretches of MT Khan Road. However, they reopened the routes later that day.
Security forces continue monitoring the situation as authorities attempt to maintain order across the city.
