Karachi residents woke up to refreshing rainfall on Tuesday after enduring days of hot and humid weather. Heavy showers were reported in multiple parts of the city, including II Chundrigar Road, Sharea Faisal, Airport Road, and adjoining localities. The rain not only cooled down the temperature but also brought much-needed relief to citizens facing prolonged humidity.
According to weather experts, the metropolis can expect intermittent showers throughout the day, with conditions favorable for moderate to heavy rainfall in some areas.
Low-Pressure System Over Arabian Sea
Meteorologists have highlighted that a monsoon system developing in the Arabian Sea has now turned into a low-pressure area due to high humidity levels. This shift is fueling more rainfall across Karachi and other districts of Sindh.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast rain-thunderstorms with occasional moderate to heavy falls in Karachi, Hyderabad, Jacobabad, Shikarpur, Larkana, Qambar Shahdadkot, Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, Badin, Thatta, and Tharparkar until August 23.
Authorities on High Alert
In preparation for further downpours, the Sindh administration and disaster management authorities have been placed on alert. Instructions have been issued to ensure immediate drainage of rainwater in low-lying areas to prevent urban flooding. Deputy commissioners and local government teams have been directed to remain in the field to monitor the situation.
Safety Advisories for Citizens
With thunderstorms expected to accompany the showers, weather experts have advised Karachi residents to take necessary safety precautions. Citizens are urged to:
-
Avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during heavy thunderstorms.
-
Use cellphones only for emergency calls to prevent accidents during lightning strikes.
-
Refrain from bathing or washing dishes during lightning activity, as current can travel through iron pipes and cause electrocution.
Outlook for Karachi
As monsoon currents continue to impact Sindh, Karachi is likely to experience more pleasant weather with periodic rain spells over the coming days. However, residents are advised to remain cautious, as heavy rainfall combined with poor drainage infrastructure may lead to waterlogging and traffic disruptions in several parts of the city.
The developing low-pressure system in the Arabian Sea will remain a key factor in determining the intensity and frequency of showers in the days ahead.
