KARACHI: Karachi is likely to experience a noticeable drop in temperature starting Tuesday, as changing weather conditions bring cooler air to the port city. Sindh Chief Meteorologist Ameer Haider shared the outlook today. He also discussed fog, falling temperatures, and the broader weather pattern affecting Karachi and other parts of the country.
According to Haider, residents woke up to dense fog on Sunday morning due to excess moisture in the air. He explained that a recent monsoon spell across the country increased humidity levels, which contributed to fog formation in Karachi. Moreover, extremely low wind speeds allowed the moisture to remain close to the ground, resulting in reduced visibility across several areas.
He recalled that similar conditions had prevailed on March 1, 2023, when visibility in Karachi dropped to zero in some locations. This time, too, parts of the city experienced low visibility, including the M-9 Motorway, where motorists reported near-zero visibility. As a result, the cityโs skyline appeared opaque, and early-morning travel became difficult in several neighbourhoods.
However, Haider reassured residents that the fog was short-lived. He categorically stated that there was no chance of fog in Karachi over the next 10 days. He added that weather conditions would stabilise as moisture levels decline and winds gradually pick up.
Temperature to remain mild till year-end
Providing details on temperatures, the Sindh chief meteorologist said the lowest temperature recorded in Karachi on Monday was 14 degrees Celsius. From Tuesday onward, temperatures are expected to range between 12 and 14 degrees Celsius. Furthermore, he said this range is likely to persist until December 31, keeping conditions relatively mild for the remainder of the year.
In addition, Haider ruled out the possibility of rainfall in Karachi during the next 10 days. He said the weather would remain dry and pleasant through the final week of December, offering residents a brief but welcome winter spell. However, he warned that the first two weeks of January are expected to be colder, with temperatures likely to dip further during nighttime and early morning hours.
Weather system affects northern areas
Meanwhile, Haider said a new weather system entered Pakistan on Sunday, December 21. As a result, snowfall has continued in the countryโs mountainous regions, improving the winter outlook for northern areas. He added that cold conditions would persist in those regions as the system continues to influence upper parts of the country.
Karachi residents, who often experience short and mild winters, have welcomed the recent change in weather. The cooler temperatures and foggy mornings marked a noticeable shift from the cityโs usual conditions, bringing a brief sense of winter to the metropolis.
Overall, meteorologists expect stable and pleasant weather in Karachi over the coming days, with cooler nights and clear skies dominating the outlook.
