KARACHI: Karachi began enforcing the new e-challan system on Tuesday, marking a major shift in traffic monitoring. Within the first six hours, scores of motorists faced over Rs12 million in fines, according to a Karachi Traffic Police report. Officers monitored major routes and recorded violations using surveillance cameras and digital tools.
Seat Belt and Helmet Violations Top List
The report confirmed that officials issued 2,662 e-challans during the initial hours of enforcement. A total of 1,535 motorists received fines for not wearing seat belts. Meanwhile, 507 riders were penalised for not wearing helmets. Overspeeding resulted in 419 challans, while 166 fines targeted drivers who ran red lights.
Multiple Traffic Offences Detected Through Cameras
Additionally, cameras detected 3 lane violations and 4 stop line breaches. Traffic police also fined motorists for various other offences. These included 32 challans for driving while using mobile phones and 7 for tinted windows. Moreover, officials recorded 4 cases of wrong-way driving on one-way routes. They also issued fines for illegal and no-parking violations, including 5 challans for each category. Officers recorded 5 wrong parking cases in restricted areas. Another 3 drivers faced fines for travelling in the wrong direction.
Government Pushes for Safer Roads
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah inaugurated the Traffic Regulations and Citation System on Monday. Authorities expect the new system to improve compliance and reduce accidents. They also plan to expand the digital network to more roads. Officials believe the initiative will support road safety and modern governance in Karachi.
