Indian actress Kangana Ranaut and renowned lyricist Javed Akhtar have reached an out-of-court settlement, bringing an end to their long-running legal battle. The two have agreed to withdraw the lawsuits they filed against each other.
Ranaut announced the resolution on her Instagram story, expressing gratitude for Akhtar’s generosity during the mediation process. “Today, Javed Ji and I have resolved our legal matter (defamation case) through mediation. He has been very gracious and has also agreed to write songs for my upcoming directorial project,” she shared, alongside a photo of the two.
The legal dispute began in 2020 when Akhtar filed a defamation suit against Ranaut, accusing her of making damaging statements about him during an interview related to the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput.
In a recent interview, Ranaut recounted a tense meeting with Akhtar, where he allegedly warned her of severe consequences for not apologizing to filmmaker Rakesh Roshan and his family. She claimed that Akhtar shouted at her, causing her to feel shaken, and that he mentioned potential repercussions, including jail time and even suicidal thoughts.
Following this incident, Akhtar filed his defamation lawsuit, asserting that Ranaut’s statements were untrue. In court, he clarified, “Whatever Kangana said is a lie. I only informed her about the agenda of our meeting; I didn’t call her to discuss trivial matters.”
In return, Ranaut filed a counter-complaint against Akhtar, accusing him of extortion and invasion of her privacy. The legal dispute officially concluded on Saturday, with both parties agreeing to resolve the matter outside of court.
