Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani of the Islamabad High Court made a stark comment on the challenges facing Pakistan, describing living in the country as a constant struggle. Reflecting on the state of governance, he noted that the number of people involved in conflicts far exceeds those trying to avoid them.
During a court session on Tuesday, Justice Kayani remarked on the deteriorating condition of the state institutions, stating, “The judiciary is one of the pillars of the state,” but lamented, “The pillars of the state seem to be floating in the air. However, I am not hopeless.” He further stated, “Anyone over 45 years old, including myself, is useless. It is the youth who must take action for this country.”
Justice Kayani emphasized that the judiciary, parliament, and executive branches have all collapsed under current circumstances.
His remarks were later addressed in a session of the National Assembly, where Speaker Ayaz Sadiq expressed strong disapproval. Referring to a media report about the judge’s comments, the Speaker said, “No one has the right to make statements against parliament, as it is our privilege.” He called the remarks “unacceptable” and instructed the law minister to deliver a clear message to the judge that such comments are not tolerable.
