Surveillance footage exposes decades-long disability fraud
A 70-year-old man from Vicenza, Italy, is at the center of a shocking fraud investigation after allegedly faking total blindness for over five decades. Authorities claim the man fraudulently collected more than €1 million in disability payments since the 1970s.
The fraud reportedly began after a work-related incident, where the man claimed to have lost his eyesight completely. Based on this declaration, he began receiving state-funded disability benefits. However, recent checks by Italy’s Financial Police raised suspicions about the legitimacy of his long-standing claim.
Caught on camera: gardening, shopping, and living normally
Investigators placed the man under surveillance and quickly gathered damning evidence. Video footage revealed the suspect independently walking through busy markets, selecting and inspecting goods before buying them. He was also seen gardening using sharp tools—activities impossible for someone with total blindness.
Further observations showed the man completing financial transactions, crossing roads unaided, and engaging in daily tasks that require normal vision. These findings directly contradicted the blindness he claimed for more than 50 years.
Legal action initiated and payments halted
Following the investigation, the Vicenza prosecutor’s office has filed a formal fraud case against the suspect. His disability benefits have been stopped, and authorities are now working to recover the public funds paid to him over the years.
Officials emphasized that this case highlights the importance of regular audits and strict monitoring of long-term social security claims.
