An Israeli tourist and an Indian woman were gang-raped, and a man was killed in an attack near the UNESCO World Heritage site of Hampi, Karnataka, police said on Saturday.
Superintendent of Police Ram Arasiddi stated that the victims were part of a group of five, including two male tourists—one of whom was American—who were stargazing near Sanapur Lake late on Thursday night. Three men on a motorcycle approached them, initially asking for directions to a petrol station before demanding money. When the group declined, one of the male tourists gave them 20 rupees, which reportedly sparked a heated confrontation.
The attackers then forced the male tourists into the Tungabhadra River canal before sexually assaulting the two women.
“Two of the men managed to survive, while the third was found dead in the canal on Saturday morning,
Local police have arrested two suspects and are continuing their investigation. A case has been filed at Gangavathi Rural Police Station with charges including extortion, robbery, gang rape, and attempted murder.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah condemned it as a “most heinous act” in a post on X, and stated that he had instructed authorities to ensure prompt justice.
Hampi, a historically significant site, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1986 and draws thousands of tourists each year. Authorities have promised enhanced security measures in the area.
The victims are currently receiving medical care at a government hospital, according to the police.
