Israeli airstrikes targeted the Yemeni capital Sanaa on Sunday, leaving six people dead and dozens injured. The attacks came in response to Houthi missile launches aimed at Israel.
According to Houthi officials, the strikes killed six civilians and wounded 86 others. The casualties included both men and women, and several children were also reported among the injured.
Israeli strikes target key facilities
The Israeli military confirmed that its airstrikes targeted multiple locations in Sanaa. These included a military compound housing the presidential palace, two power plants, and a fuel storage facility. Officials stated the strikes were necessary due to recent Houthi missile and drone attacks against Israeli territory.
“The strikes were conducted in response to attacks against Israel and its civilians, including surface-to-surface missiles and UAVs,” the military said in a statement.
Houthis escalate missile attacks
On Friday, the Houthis claimed they had fired a ballistic missile at Israel. They said the attack was carried out in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.
An Israeli Air Force official later confirmed that the missile was unique in design. It likely carried several sub-munitions designed to detonate upon impact. “This is the first time such a missile has been launched from Yemen,” the official added.
Conflict rooted in Gaza war
Since the Gaza war began in October 2023, Houthi forces have intensified attacks against Israel. They have repeatedly launched missiles and drones across the region. Moreover, they have targeted commercial vessels in the Red Sea, claiming these actions are part of their support for Palestinians.
Israel has consistently retaliated with strikes on Houthi-controlled areas, including critical infrastructure such as the Hodeidah port. These tit-for-tat attacks have widened the regional conflict and raised concerns of further escalation.
Houthis vow continued resistance
Senior Houthi leader Abdul Qader Al Murtada declared that the group would continue its support for Palestinians. He emphasized their commitment despite the growing cost.
“Israel must know that we will not abandon our brothers in Gaza, whatever the sacrifices,” he said.
Rising humanitarian toll
The strikes in Sanaa have once again highlighted the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Yemen. Thousands of civilians are caught between Israeli retaliation and Houthi military actions. The destruction of power plants and fuel storage facilities is expected to further worsen living conditions.
Despite international appeals for restraint, both sides remain committed to military escalation. Analysts warn that unless diplomacy prevails, the conflict could expand beyond Yemen and Gaza, pulling in more regional actors.
