Decision Reflects Deepening Policy Differences Between Allies
Tel Aviv: Israel has suspended the sale of defense products to France, according to senior Israeli sources cited on Tuesday. Officials said Defense Minister Israel Katz ordered the halt, while the move also reflects broader strategic direction under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Sources indicated that Israel took the decision after reassessing its defense ties with France, citing what it views as increasingly hostile positions from Paris over the past two years. Consequently, Israeli authorities have grown cautious about sharing sensitive military technology.
However, officials clarified that existing contracts will remain in place, and private defense firms may continue limited engagements. Therefore, the immediate economic impact may remain contained, though long-term cooperation could decline.
Ongoing Cooperation Continues Despite Strategic Rift
Meanwhile, Israel may still procure certain defense products from France if permitted, although such transactions have already decreased in recent years. Larger government-to-government agreements, however, are likely to face significant disruption.
In addition, analysts note that France could lose opportunities in Israelโs growing defense export market, particularly as other NATO countries increase purchases of Israeli systems. For instance, Germany and other allies have expanded acquisitions in response to evolving security threats linked to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Tensions between Israel and France have intensified over several policy disagreements. Paris has pushed for an early end to the Gaza conflict and supported recognition of a Palestinian state, moves viewed critically in Jerusalem. Furthermore, France has urged restraint in Israeli operations against Hezbollah.
Despite these differences, both countries continue limited intelligence cooperation. France also supported Israel during missile threats in 2024 and backed international measures related to Iran in 2025, underscoring a complex but ongoing relationship.
