Car-Free Zone to Transform City Heart
ISLAMABAD: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has launched work to convert a section of Blue Area into Islamabad’s first pedestrian-only street, promising a vibrant space for walking, shopping, and dining.
The Rs240 million project will stretch from Savour Foods to Khyber Plaza, along Jinnah Avenue, fully free of vehicles. Citizens will be able to stroll safely, enjoy meals at food outlets, and explore digital installations in a relaxed, car-free environment.
The CDA plans to provide ample parking, including a nearby multi-storey plaza for 950 vehicles and 150 additional spaces in front of Khyber Plaza, ensuring convenience for visitors.
Modern Amenities and Family-Friendly Spaces
Spanning approximately 800 metres, the pedestrian zone is designed as a “walk-and-shop” area, and the CDA intends to introduce electric carts for the elderly and children. Digital screens at entry and exit points will display entertainment content and public information.
CDA officials confirmed the project will be completed in 45 days, with full lighting and facilities ready within two months. The design was finalized after consulting Blue Area traders to ensure commercial compatibility.
“This will be a perfect food street and recreational spot for families,” said Member Engineering Syed Nafasat Raza, highlighting the initiative’s focus on urban enjoyment and safety.
Currently, Islamabad only has one food street, Melody Food Park, which faces challenges such as limited parking and operational issues despite recent beautification efforts.
The CDA also plans a second development, Capital Street near Shakarparian, featuring restaurants, art workshops, an expo hall, and recreational spaces, though work there has not yet started.
