Islamabad rolled out the red carpet as President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, arrived on Friday for his first official visit to Pakistan. The ceremonial welcome was led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir. The visit is expected to deepen bilateral ties and focus on trade, investment, energy cooperation, and regional stability.
Ceremonial Reception and Formal Honors
Sheikh Mohamed landed at Nur Khan Air Base, where he was received by PM Shehbaz, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, federal ministers, and senior officials. The two leaders exchanged greetings, shaking hands warmly, while children dressed in traditional attire presented flowers.
The UAE president’s aircraft was escorted by Pakistan Air Force JF-17 Thunder jets as it entered Pakistani airspace, offering an aerial salute. Upon landing, a 21-gun salute was fired, and a formal guard of honor was presented by a smartly turned-out contingent of the armed forces. The national anthems of Pakistan and the UAE were played during the ceremony.
Following the reception, PM Shehbaz introduced members of his federal cabinet to the visiting dignitary. Sheikh Mohamed reciprocated by introducing members of his delegation.
High-Level Meetings and Bilateral Talks
During his visit, Sheikh Mohamed is scheduled to hold extensive talks with PM Shehbaz and meet President Asif Ali Zardari along with other senior leaders. Officials said discussions would focus on enhancing Pakistan-UAE relations. Trade, investment, and energy cooperation are expected to take center stage. Regional and global issues, including stability and security, will also be addressed.
The visit comes at the invitation of the Pakistani prime minister. Officials have described it as a milestone in further strengthening ties between Pakistan and the UAE. Both countries aim to expand cooperation in multiple sectors and enhance diplomatic relations.
Security and Public Arrangements in Islamabad
Islamabad has implemented heightened security arrangements for the visit. Major roads, including Constitution Avenue, have been decorated with Pakistani and UAE flags, banners, and decorative lights. To ensure public safety, heavy traffic entry into the city was restricted for most of the day.
A public holiday was declared in the federal capital to mark the occasion. Courts remained closed, while banks and essential services continued operations. Authorities emphasized that the arrangements were designed to ensure smooth conduct of the visit while maintaining public convenience.
The ceremonial reception and the planned high-level discussions underline the importance Pakistan attaches to its partnership with the UAE. The visit is expected to pave the way for expanded economic and strategic cooperation between the two nations.
