The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has announced a major step toward transforming Islamabad into a “Free Wi-Fi City,” with plans to provide free internet access at key public locations. In the first phase of the initiative, 30 strategic sites will be connected, including metro and feeder bus stations, public parks, and other high-traffic areas.
The decision was made during a high-level meeting chaired by CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa, who emphasized the need for modern digital infrastructure to enhance public convenience and promote a connected urban environment.
“This is a step forward in our vision to make Islamabad a smart and digitally inclusive capital,” Chairman Randhawa stated. “In the coming months, residents and visitors will experience improved internet accessibility at major public spaces.”
Partnership with NTC and Sustainable Revenue Model
To implement the project, the CDA will collaborate with the National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC). While CDA’s technical team will assist in the initial setup, NTC will take full responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the free Wi-Fi network.
In a bid to ensure the system’s long-term sustainability, Chairman Randhawa has instructed the development of a marketing and revenue model. Any funds generated through this model—likely from digital advertising or partnerships—will be reinvested into upgrading and maintaining the service.
Toward a Smart and Connected Islamabad
This initiative is a key component of CDA’s broader plan to digitally modernize Islamabad. By providing free and reliable internet access in public areas, the city aims to bridge the digital divide and offer convenience to students, workers, tourists, and commuters alike.
The CDA plans to expand the service to other locations in future phases, moving toward its goal of turning Islamabad into a fully connected smart city with comprehensive digital infrastructure.
