Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi announced that the Islamabad-Tehran-Istanbul (ITI) train service will resume operations from December 31, a major milestone in enhancing regional connectivity between Pakistan, Iran, and Türkiye through improved rail infrastructure.
Addressing a press conference in Lahore on Sunday, Abbasi revealed that Pakistan Railways is constructing a new 400-kilometre track expected to be completed by 2028. He said the ministry is working to modernize the railway system, with several projects underway to upgrade infrastructure and improve efficiency.
Highlighting progress, Abbasi noted that Karachi Railway Station had been significantly expanded and that transparency was ensured in recent recruitment processes. He said the government is focused on improving passenger facilities and ensuring a comfortable travel experience.
The minister emphasized that cleanliness systems on trains, particularly those running between Lahore and Rawalpindi, had been upgraded. He also shared that a $2 billion project for nationwide track upgradation is in the pipeline.
Abbasi reaffirmed Pakistan’s strong trade relations with Iran and Türkiye and said the restoration of the ITI service would not only revive regional trade but also promote economic cooperation among the three nations. The train, once operational, will reconnect key economic hubs across South and Central Asia.
To further enhance passenger experience, Abbasi announced plans to introduce cafeterias and internet access at major railway stations. He also mentioned ongoing collaboration with Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on the “Clean Punjab Project,” under which train drivers’ restrooms and station facilities will be renovated.
He added that efforts are being made to appoint honest officers to curb corruption and theft, while Pakistan Railways is transitioning toward digitized operations for greater efficiency and transparency. Abbasi reiterated his personal commitment to addressing every issue related to the railways sector.
