In light of the ceasefire agreement between Iran and the US, diplomatic negotiations have taken shape, with Islamabad assuming prominence as a crucial place where discussions will take place. In an important development, the President of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, has agreed to take part in the negotiations in Pakistan that will be held later in the week.
Growing momentum for regional dialogue
Before this, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had a long phone conversation with President Ebrahim Pezeshkian, lasting more than 45 minutes, in which both leaders maintained a friendly attitude towards each other. In the conversation, the prime minister appreciated the leadership of Iran for its ability to exercise restraint in dealing with a difficult situation and its willingness to reach the point of ceasefire.
Besides, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif offered to hold peace talks between Iran and the United States in Islamabad. The president expressed his willingness to participate in the peace talks. Furthermore, the prime minister showed his admiration for the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei.
Mutual appreciation and cautious optimism
President Pezeshkian, on the other hand, thanked Pakistan for its role as a diplomat in bringing down the tension level. He recognized the support that Islamabad had shown during the brief truce period and wished the people of Pakistan well. It is also important to note that both parties were going to keep each other informed throughout the process of development.
On the other hand, the cease fire itself was a result of increased tension level. The president of the United States, Donald Trump, agreed to observe a two-week truce just before the deadline for the Strait of Hormuz. Trump had already hinted at some dire consequences earlier on.
