Geneva: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has submitted Tehranโs revised nuclear proposal ahead of a third round of indirect negotiations with the United States in Geneva on Thursday, signaling renewed diplomatic momentum.
Omanโs Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad al-Busaidi confirmed that talks began earlier in the day but paused temporarily. In a post on X, he said US and Iranian negotiators exchanged โcreative and positive ideasโ and would resume discussions later.
According to Iranian media, Araghchi handed the document to Busaidi, outlining key elements of a potential agreement. Officials said the proposal addresses US concerns about Iranโs nuclear program while countering what Tehran describes as American โexcuses.โ
Iranian officials stated that the new proposal offers maximum flexibility within Tehranโs established red lines. They emphasized Iranโs right to maintain its nuclear fuel cycle while pledging guarantees that the program will remain peaceful through monitoring and verification mechanisms.
However, Tehran insisted that any agreement must include the lifting of sanctions. Without sanctions relief, officials argued, flexibility cannot translate into practical steps.
Meanwhile, Busaidi met International Atomic Energy Agency chief Rafael Grossi to discuss technical aspects of the nuclear file. He expressed cautious optimism, noting that both sides demonstrated flexibility during negotiations.
Ahead of the talks, Araghchi said Iran stands prepared for both war and peace but prefers a fair and balanced agreement. President Masoud Pezeshkian reiterated that Iran does not seek nuclear weapons, citing Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khameneiโs longstanding ban on weapons of mass destruction.
Nonetheless, Washington maintains that zero uranium enrichment remains its benchmark, although reports suggest limited enrichment under strict safeguards could be considered.
As US military assets increase in the region, diplomats view the Geneva talks as a critical opportunity to prevent broader confrontation.
