Tehran โ Abbas Araghchi stated that Iran is prepared to sustain its conflict with the United States and Israel for an extended period, emphasizing readiness to continue fighting for at least six months. Speaking in an interview with Al Jazeera, he underscored that Tehran will defend itself without accepting externally imposed timelines.
He clarified that no formal negotiations are currently taking place between Iran and the United States. Instead, he described ongoing exchanges of messages through intermediaries, stressing that such communication does not constitute diplomatic talks.
Iran Rejects Deadlines and Questions Diplomatic Intent
Meanwhile, Araghchi rejected claims that Iran had accepted US proposals or presented counterconditions. He stated that Tehran has not responded to any reported plans and dismissed such reports as speculation.
Furthermore, he emphasized that Iranโs leadership will decide on any future negotiations based on national interests. He also highlighted a lack of trust in US commitments, citing previous agreements that failed to hold.
In addition, he reiterated that Iran seeks a complete end to the war across the region rather than a temporary ceasefire. He called for guarantees to prevent future conflict and compensation for damages caused during hostilities.
Hormuz Control and Regional Security Remain Central
Moreover, Araghchi addressed the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, stating that Iran currently allows passage but restricts access for countries engaged in conflict with it. He noted that some vessels have already avoided the route due to security concerns.
He added that Iran remains prepared for further escalation, including potential ground threats, while maintaining that it targets only military objectives linked to US forces in the region.
Consequently, Iran signaled continued resistance while leaving the door open for future diplomacy under specific conditions.
