Doha โ Iranโs Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that external guarantees from individual countries or international bodies would not ensure lasting security, during an interview with Al Jazeera. He emphasized that past experience, including assurances from the UN Security Council, has proven insufficient.
Araghchi noted that Iran is reviewing proposals from friendly nations but stressed that any agreement must protect the rights and security of the Iranian people. He added that Tehran would only consider arrangements aligned with its own terms for ending the conflict.
Iran Rejects Deadlines, Calls for Respectful Engagement
Meanwhile, the foreign minister firmly rejected externally imposed timelines. He stated that artificial deadlines complicate diplomacy rather than facilitate it. According to him, Iran will not accept pressure tactics in negotiations.
Furthermore, Araghchi urged the United States to revise its approach. He argued that threatening language undermines dialogue, adding that Iran expects to be treated with respect as a sovereign nation with a long-standing civilization. He warned that failure to do so would provoke firm responses on the ground.
Hormuz Access Tied to Security and Wartime Conditions
In addition, Araghchi addressed the status of the Strait of Hormuz, stating that it lies within the territorial waters of Iran and Oman. He confirmed that while the passage remains open, Iran restricts access for countries engaged in conflict with it.
He also highlighted that several ships have already avoided the route due to rising security concerns and insurance costs. However, Iran has facilitated safe passage for friendly nations through coordinated arrangements.
Looking ahead, Araghchi said Iran and Oman would determine post-war governance of the strait, aiming to balance regional stability, safe navigation, and environmental protection.
