Tehran sets conditions for Islamabad negotiations
TEHRAN: Iran has made future negotiations with the United States conditional on full adherence to ceasefire commitments across all fronts, particularly in Lebanon, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said on Thursday.
Speaking to reporters, Baqaei strongly condemned Israeli actions in Lebanon and expressed condolences to victimsโ families. He also praised the resilience of the Lebanese people and highlighted growing solidarity between Iran and Lebanon amid ongoing tensions.
Furthermore, he emphasized that halting hostilities in Lebanon remains a central component of the ceasefire framework proposed by Pakistan. According to Baqaei, any deviation from these commitments would indicate that the United States has failed to uphold its obligations.
He added that Pakistan has invited both sides to Islamabad for talks aimed at ending the conflict. However, he clarified that Iran will only participate once it receives firm assurances regarding comprehensive ceasefire compliance.
Delegation plans uncertain as tensions and distrust persist
Meanwhile, Baqaei noted that Iran has yet to finalize its delegation for the proposed talks. He stated that authorities would announce details once travel arrangements are confirmed.
In addition, Iranian officials reiterated their broader demands, including the withdrawal of US forces from the region, lifting of sanctions, and greater control over strategic waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz.
The latest remarks come amid heightened tensions following recent military confrontations between Iran, the United States, and Israel. Despite a Pakistan-mediated two-week ceasefire, uncertainty continues to surround its durability.
Iranโs leadership has also stressed that negotiations represent a continuation of strategic engagement rather than an end to conflict, underscoring deep mistrust toward Washington.
