Venezuela Withdraws Diplomatic Staff from Seven Latin American Nations Over Election Dispute

Venezuela has announced the withdrawal of its diplomatic staff from seven Latin American countries that questioned the legitimacy of President Nicolas Maduro’s recent election victory. On Monday, the Foreign Ministry issued a statement condemning the “interventionist actions and statements” of Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Peru, Panama, the Dominican Republic, and Uruguay. These countries had signed a joint declaration demanding a comprehensive review of the election results.

The controversy follows the Venezuelan National Electoral Council’s declaration of Maduro’s victory, which grants him a third consecutive six-year term. This announcement has been met with skepticism from several Latin American governments, which have raised concerns about the transparency and fairness of the electoral process.

In response to the international criticism, Venezuela’s ministers of defense, communications, and technology, along with the head of the National Assembly, have publicly supported Maduro. During a nationally televised ceremony, Maduro addressed the nation, denouncing the external criticism as part of a broader attempt to undermine his administration. “We have never been moved by hatred. On the contrary, we have always been victims of the powerful,” he asserted. Maduro accused the international community of attempting to orchestrate a “coup d’etat” with a “fascist and counterrevolutionary nature,” and vowed that Venezuela would not yield to external pressures.

He further emphasized his administration’s commitment to upholding the nation’s legal and constitutional framework, asserting that the country would resist any form of intervention or weakness in the face of perceived threats. The diplomatic fallout underscores ongoing tensions between Venezuela and several neighboring countries regarding political stability and electoral integrity. Maduro’s government remains defiant, focusing on asserting its sovereignty amidst the international dispute.
