UN Security Council
The UN Security Council may vote next week, at the request of Algeria, on a resolution seeking an “immediate” ceasefire in Gaza, according to diplomatic sources. Algeria initiated discussions on a new draft following the International Court of Justice’s late January ruling, instructing Israel to do everything possible to prevent genocidal acts in its Gaza war targeting Hamas militants.
The latest version of the text demands an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, rejecting forced displacement of the Palestinian civilian population and calling for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages. Algeria proposed a Security Council vote for Tuesday, but the US signaled it might veto the measure.
US President Joe Biden is collaborating with Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and leaders of Egypt and Qatar on a hostage deal for a “prolonged pause in fighting.” However, the US Ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, stated that the proposed resolution might not achieve the desired outcomes and would not be supported by the United States.
The new text, like previous versions opposed by Israel and the US, does not condemn Hamas’s unprecedented attack. Algeria’s latest initiative has faced criticism, with the US warning it could undermine negotiations. The Security Council has seen limited action on Gaza since October 7, with Washington vetoing ceasefire texts in October and December despite the escalating humanitarian crisis.
Meanwhile, Israel rejected appeals to delay a threatened assault on Gaza’s city of Rafah. Qatar acknowledged that prospects for a new pause in the conflict were not promising, complicating efforts for a ceasefire.
The International Court of Justice will start public hearings on Israel’s occupation of Palestine on Monday. Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi rejected reports of Palestinians being displaced to Egypt, emphasizing the rejection of the liquidation of the Palestinian cause.
