US Pledges $101 Million Aid Package for Pakistan to Support Democracy and Human Rights

WASHINGTON: In a significant move, US Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asia, Donald Lu, announced that President Joe Biden has requested $101 million in aid for Pakistan to bolster democracy and human rights. The announcement was made during a hearing of the American House of Representatives committee, convened to discuss the US budget for South Asia.

The proposed financial assistance aims to address several critical areas, including combating terrorism, supporting economic reforms, and providing debt relief. Lu emphasized that the aid is crucial for stabilizing Pakistan’s beleaguered economy, which remains fragile despite securing a 37-month International Monetary Fund (IMF) program.

“These funds will be instrumental in supporting Pakistan’s efforts to maintain economic stability and uphold democratic values,” stated Lu. He underscored the US commitment to assisting Pakistan in overcoming its economic challenges and strengthening its democratic institutions.

Donald Lu, a figure of contention in Pakistan, especially after former Prime Minister Imran Khan accused him of orchestrating his government’s downfall in 2022, reiterated the US’s dedication to fostering democratic governance and human rights in the region.

In addition to addressing Pakistan’s needs, Lu voiced concerns over the deteriorating situation of women and minority groups in Afghanistan. He made it clear that the normalization of relations with the Taliban government hinges on the respect and protection of Afghan citizens’ rights. The assistant secretary also demanded the release of all American prisoners held by the Taliban.

The United States continues to be the largest donor to Afghanistan, providing substantial humanitarian aid since the Taliban’s takeover in August 2021. Following the chaotic withdrawal of US troops, Washington has contributed over $17.9 billion in assistance to the war-torn country.

Lu’s testimony highlights the US’s strategic focus on South Asia, balancing aid and diplomatic pressure to promote stability, democracy, and human rights in a region plagued by ongoing conflict and economic turmoil. The proposed aid package for Pakistan signifies a continued effort by the US to support its allies in achieving long-term peace and prosperity.
